Want to Help Typhoon Haiyan Victims? Post an 'Unselfie'

صورة
An ad agency exec has applied his marketing prowess to help funnel aid to victims of Typhoon Haiyan by starting a movement of "unselfies." Nicholas Bordas, VP at TBWA/Europe and president of Being Worldwide,  proposed  the idea, which he had spotted elsewhere, to his 61,000  LinkedIn  followers on Thursday. The idea originated with  BBDO Guerrero  in Manila, though. "Social networks in the Philippines have become indispensable sources of information and aid for Haiyan survivors," Bordas noted in the post. "Photos not relevant to the current disaster are discouraged. However, people have been posting 'unselfies' where instead of showing their face, they show their support for the Philippines by holding up a piece of paper with the URL of the donation page to send aid." The pictures direct users to  SupportUnicef.org/Philippines , where they can donate money to Typhoon Haiyan  victims. The simple idea has caught on among  Instagram ...

The New Golden Age of Archaeology Is Right Now

صورة
Narrowing her eyes , keen with years of research and experience, Sarah Parcak squints past the dust and sand. Hands out, Egypt's vast landscape at her fingertips, she's searching for clues that will lead her to something extraordinary, buried and missing for thousands of years. She and her team have been exploring the land for more than a year, looking for a settlement or structure that uncovers the ancient capital of Tanis. No one knows what it looks like, but Parcak has an idea. And she's getting close. Then suddenly, at the northeast region of the Nile Delta, administrative buildings, streets, palaces and houses of all sizes surface before her eyes. Parcak is excited. She has found Tanis. But she isn't actually in Egypt — she's thousands of miles away in her lab in Alabama, staring at processed, false color satellite imagery. It's an emerging trend in archaeology that enables people to make extremely important archaeological finds — before excavatin...

UK Gov't Created Fake LinkedIn Accounts to Spy on Belgian Telecom

صورة
The  U.K. Government Communications Headquarters  — the British equivalent of the  National Security Agency  — created fake  LinkedIn  pages to hack into a major Belgian telecommunications company. The hack was originally  reported  by  Der Spiegel  in September, based on documents leaked by former intelligence contractor  Edward Snowden . At the time, it was not known how the GCHQ pulled off the attack. As it turns out, the hack was carried out using what is called a “man-in-the-middle attack.” In this case, we now know that means the GCHQ used fake LinkedIn pages to redirect employees to sites containing malware. By tricking company personnel into downloading the malicious software, the GCHQ appears to have been able to breach Belgacom cybersecurity. This latest leak, published by  Der Spiegel  on Sunday, is the  first reported instance of LinkedIn being exploited by a government spy agency.  Unlike...

Too Much, Too Fast: An iPhone Tester Trapped in Apple's Supply Chai

Beneath the spotlight in a San Francisco, Calif., performing arts theater,  Apple  marketing chief Phil Schiller was about to stage-manage one of the most anticipated product unveilings of the year. It was the first post-Steve Jobs reveal of a new iPhone. Schiller was comforted by what he saw in the darkened audience. “It’s really neat to stand here and see all the Apple logos glowing,” he said of computers on the laps of journalists, analysts and fans, all poised to send his words into the world. The lights dimmed, and Schiller stepped backward, stage left. A glowing iPhone 5 came up from beneath the stage, rising on a pedestal. “It is an absolute jewel,” he said. Schiller then pitched the phone’s features, including an 8-megapixel camera. A photo of a quiet cove flashed on the big screen. “The ocean just looks bluer on the iPhone 5,” he said, as an image of two boys, lying on green grass and smiling into the lens, replaced the cove. “Kids look happier. They real...
